Wednesday

Fourth of July Week

Friday July 1st

Katie, Nick, Henry and Audrey arrived this afternoon! We heard Nick loves fireworks so after supper, we headed downtown for the display by the James River.  Luckily, we parked up at the top of Monument Terrace because the entire downtown area was packed with cars!  It was a really nice fireworks show!

Saturday

Nick had never been on the Blue Ridge Parkway so we thought we would drive north towards Afton.  First we stopped at the Pie Shop for lunch.  It was great to see they are still going strong and everyone loved their pies!

When the kids realized we were going to be by the Blue Ridge Tunnel in Afton, they really wanted to take Katie and Nick through it!  So we decided to go there, but first we needed to stop at Veritas Vineyard for a tasting since they closed at 5 P.M.

Then, we headed to the tunnel for a walk in the dark.  It is a very unique hike and everyone loved it!

It was time to go home so we headed south to Lynchburg.  Gretchen was driving and when she pulled onto Route 29, something really went wrong with Katie’s van. She managed to pull into the Exxon station before it died!  So we needed Plan B!!  A call to AAA arranged for the van to be towed to the Toyota dealer in Lynchburg.  Luckily the Helms were home and could come to pick us up and take us home! Thank you Emily and David! We had quite an exciting adventure today!

Sunday

We went out to the Lake to visit Jenny and the Gorman’s who arrived yesterday. Katie was excited to see cousin Jessica! We had a fun time swimming, fishing, paddle boarding and kayaking! After supper, Katie, Nick and the kids headed home in their rental car and Jenny headed to Greensboro to pick up the Phelps who were flying in today. Thanks Jenny, it was a fun day!

Jessica, Henry, William, Josh, Benjamin, Jenny, Gretchen, Tom, Katie, Audrey, and Nick!
Wednesday July 6th

Kelley and Maggie arrived in time for happy hour and dinner. But…during happy hour a storm knocked out the electricity!  So we had to break out the old, old, old camp stove to cook part of dinner! Then after dinner, we thought we should eat ice cream instead of cupcakes for dessert so it would not melt.  However, while we were dishing the ice cream, the power came on!

Thursday

Katie’s car was fixed, so our first task was to meet her at the car rental place and then take her to the Toyota dealer.  So Kelley and Maggie got to see her for a few minutes.  Then we headed to Afton to pick up coffee and eat lunch at Veritas Vineyard! It was a beautiful day, a beautiful spot and lunch was good as always.

After lunch we drove “5 minutes” to Shenandoah National Park so Maggie could get her park pass stamped.  We drove about 35 miles north stopping at the overlooks! Living at the beach, Kelley and Maggie both like looking out from the mountains to the valleys below. We drove home through Charlottesville stopping at Trader Joe’s and  then pointing out where Katie’s car stopped running on the way home!

Friday

We drove to the lake to spend time with Jenny and her family.  All of the kids and adults had a great time in the water.  They swam, fished, and rode on the raft pulled by the Ski Doo.

Maggie got to try paddle boarding and kayaking for the first time under Jessica’s tutelage.  She did really well and loved both activities!

Maggie with her cousin Adaline!

The Cousins!

It was wonderful being with the Gorman and Phelps families this week, seeing how the kids have grown and learning about their daily interests and activities.  Thank you so much Jenny for hosting all of us!

Tom, Gretchen, Kelley, Maggie, Andrew, Adaline, Grady, Janelle, Jenny, Hunter, William, Jessica, Benjamin and Josh!

Friday

Maggie likes history so we decided to go to Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s summer home in Lynchburg during his retirement years.  We all learned a lot during the tour of the house and grounds!

View of the front of the house.

Ready for lunch in the dining room!

View from Jefferson’s Parlor.

Thank you Katie and Kelley for making the trip to Lynchburg. It is always a highlight of the year to host everyone, enjoy some fun adventures, measure how much the kids have grown and see how they have changed!  We love you all!

Tuesday

Weekend at the Lake

Saturday 6/11

We had a great relaxing weekend with Jenny at SML. We cooked together, did Yoga and watched movies...and we put together Droplet!

We went to the Landing for dinner and Jenny got a feel for driving the boat in the late evening.  It won’t be long until she feels comfortable driving the boat at night!

We went for a hike in the county park and the weather was perfect. Gretchen and I refer to “Vermont skies” when we she blue and white landscapes like these!

On the hike I took the GoPro camera to see how it captures still photos.  It was impressive!  We had a fun time Jenny, thank you!

Monday

Making Life Easier

Fall, 2021

It all began when the sail club said they did not want motor boats on the property any more.  So, we decided to sell our Key West.  We contacted the dealer we bought it from 5 years ago.  The owner said they would buy it.  When we took it to the dealer, he had no Key West Boats in stock. The pandemic had stopped production.  He offered us what we paid for it! DEAL!!

A few weeks later, we thought , our car sits in the drive way because we take the truck camping, biking, sailing, etc.  So, we decided to sell the Camry and could not believe the price the dealer offered us! Again the pandemic halted the delivery of new vehicles. DEAL!

Spring 2022

We have not sailed our boat in two years! Sailing no longer is good for our bodies and we do not do any activity that will harm our bodies and keep us from biking!  So we sold our sailboat  to a Catalina dealer in NC.  Not quite the type of price we got for the motor boat or car, but not many folks are taking up sailing these days!

Note: this will be our last year as members of the Virginia Inland Sailing Association!  We have decades of great memories of our experiences at VISA but it is time to put sailing behind us!

Maggie’s Spring Break

Monday, April 18th

It’s Maggie’s spring break and we are headed to South Carolina to spend some time with her as we do every year!  We got the camper set up at Huntington State Park in time to head to the Hills for happy hour and dinner.

Minutes into happy hour, Gretchen stood up and said she had a pain in her side.  Five minutes later, Gretchen was in severe pain ( I’ve never seen anyone in pain like hers!) and could barely breathe so we headed to the ER!  The staff did a great job stabilizing Gretchen and indicated she needed to be transferred over night to a trauma center.  The doctor got her in to McLeod Medical Center in Florence and she was transferred by ambulance arriving at 6am. By the time I arrived in Florence about 9:30am, Gretchen had already been operated on to repair a hole in her intestine and was in recovery! So we are greatful both hospitals quickly diagnosed and treated Gretchen promptly!

A few days after surgery!

Friday

Maggie, Kelley and I moved the camper to the KOA. We stayed in the Myrtle Beach area so Grandma could see Maggie when she got out of the hospital!

Wednesday 27th

Gretchen got out of the hospital and she is on the road to recovery!

Relaxing at the KOA campground.

Mother’s Day

Maggie and Kelley came to Ocean Lakes (Our 3rd Campground) and we played miniature golf, and had dinner with them to celebrate the holiday! I’m positive spending time with you guys set Grandma on the fast track to recovery from her surgery.  I’m so glad we kept the camper in the area so she could spend time with you two!

Well Maggie it was not the spring break we anticipated was it?  Anyway, it was great seeing you and hearing all of the great things you are doing in school and dance!  Kelley, thanks for all of your help providing meals, moving the camper, doing wash, etc. I appreciate your help during the busy weeks you have! And just think, school will be out in a few weeks and you can relax for a few months!

Jenny’s 70th

Sunday March 27th

We had an early 70th birthday celebration for Jenny today!  First, we went to hear the Garth Newel Piano Quartet at Randolph College.  We’re glad they’ve been coming to Lynchburg to play. It is easier than driving to Hot Springs, but we do try to get to their home venue each summer!

This evening we cooked a special dinner.  We all worked diligently (while sipping wine) to prepare the food! We had Amarone Risotto over sautéed butter nut squash and filet minion with a red wine sauce.  It was delicious!

And for dessert, Gretchen made an apple crumb pie!

We had so much fun celebrating your birthday with you Jenny; so here’s hoping there will be many more celebrations to come!

Thursday

Audrey’s Vacation March 2022

Monday 3/14

It is spring break for Audrey and Grandma and Grandpa are on our way to Hillsborough to pick her up to spend the week with us in Lynchburg.

Tuesday

We’re headed to hike the Blue Ridge Tunnel in Afton, but first we stopped to pick up coffee at Trager Brothers.  The roaster happily explained to us the process of roasting coffee beans.  When asked what she thought of the coffee shop, Audrey said “The smell is disgusting in there!”

Next, we stoped for lunch at the Blue Mountain Brewery.  Audrey said she really liked her mac and cheese and french fries….although you couldn’t tell from the look on her face! 😊

We arrived at the trailhead and hiked up to the tunnel entrance.  The tunnel was built in the 1850 by the Blue Ridge Railroad. It is 4,237  feet long and is quite dark in the middle. Note, you can just see the far end in the photo, just a dot of light!

Here is Audrey standing in front of a waterfall. With out our flashlights, you couldn’t see it!

We finally made it to the far end. It was really chilly in the tunnel.

That is ice Audrey is pointing to on the entrance wall!

Here are Audrey’s favorite photos she took in the cave!

The waterfall.

A crayfish she found in a puddle!

We hiked over four miles by the time we got back to the car!

Wednesday

We learned to play Apple to Apples this morning! Then we went to the Blackwater Creek Trail so Audrey could roller skate.

It didn’t take very long for Audrey to leave Grandpa and Grandma in the dust….very, very far behind her!

She is doing very well roller skating. Today she skated over two miles!  She was so hungry, we had to take her to Cinn City to get a treat!

Thursday

It’s St. Patrick’s Day and Audrey is wearing Aunt Jenny’s gifts!  Today we are going to the Roanoke Science Museum.

Audrey had a good time playing with the exhibits.  She loved the one showing how red blood cells travel through the body and…

she landed a capsule on the moon and…

she discovered how parachutes work and…

she built a house and…

she built with huge legos!

Back home we did play Apples to Apples!

Friday

Alas, it’s time for Audrey to go home. Grandma and Grandpa loved having you in Lynchburg this week. We love seeing how you change as you are growing up! Before lunch we played Apples to Apples and then headed to Mebane to drop Audrey off at her Dad’s house.  Love you Audrey, hugs..hugs..hugs!!!
