Henry’s Vacation

Sunday, August 1st

We traveled to NC to spend the day with Katie and pick up Henry for his vacation. Unfortunately, Audrey was sick and we had to skip our visit but we did get Henry.  Audrey did not have COVID-19! She quickly recovered from her cold and was back to school by Wednesday.

Monday

We went to Smith Mountain Lake and enjoyed fishing and swimming off of Jenny’s dock.

Then we headed up the Roanoke River with the idea of eating at Drifters Restaurant.  First we anchored in a cove to swim and fish.  Then we headed to the restaurant but it was closed, even though the website said it was open! Oh well, time to head to Lynchburg and figure out Plan B.

Tuesday

Today is the day Henry says he is going to set a new personal best mileage record riding his bike, so we headed to Blackwater Creek!

It was a beautiful day and we were surprised how much stronger a rider Henry has become.  He is growing up!  Did he set a new personal best? You bet he did, 16.6 miles.  His old record was 13.8 miles.  What will you go for next time Henry?

Of course Henry needed to celebrate!

Wednesday

Out to the Lake we went again. Our first stop was Hot Shots for a round of golf.  It was a very tricky course but a lot of fun to play.

Next stop was Jenny’s to pick up the boat which provided Henry with the time to catch a fish.  We headed down toward the dam to anchor in a cove to swim and fish. Then we headed to Mitchell’s Marina for an early dinner.  It was open!

Thursday

We drove to Nelson County to check out a new recreation spot that opened this winter, the Blue Ridge Tunnel. It was one of four tunnels build to carry the railroad over the Blue Ridge Mountains west of Charlottesville. At the time it was built (1858), it was the longest tunnel (4,264 feet) in the North America.

East Entrance

If you park in the lot at the Afton side of the tunnel, the walk to the western side and back is almost three miles. You definitely need a flashlight because it is really dark in the tunnel.  Henry did find crayfish in puddles along the walls plus a toad!

Friday

Alas, it is time to take Henry home.  We had a great time with you this week!  We are so impressed in how much you have grown up and matured during the COVID-19 crisis.  Looking forward to seeing you guys more this coming year!
