Spring Break

Friday, March 18, 2016

This weekend we were scheduled to babysit for Katie while she worked.  She called to see if we could bring the kids to Lynchburg so she would have time to do some moving tasks at night.  This will be exciting since it is the first time Audrey has been to Grandma and Grandpa's house without mommy.  But she will have her big brother with her!  We picked the kids up in Hillsborough and arrived home in time to break out the toys.

Of course, Henry loves to play Go Fish and Shut the Box...and we did! Sometimes with Audrey playing as Grandma's partner.

Saturday

Amazement Square was first on the agenda today.  A new exhibit shows kids how to eat healthy and stresses keeping active.  This frog couch lets you sit in peace watching TV and then it pumps up lifting you to your feet to remind you can keep active!

The canal exhibit is always a favorite.

Sunday

We went to Otter Creek so the kids could ride their scooters around the campground just like their mother and aunt liked to do a long, long time ago!  Playing baseball, searching for deer in the woods and an exciting close basketball game between Henry (UNC) and Grandpa (UVA) won on the last shot by Henry completed the day!

Of course, Henry loves to play Go Fish and Shut the Box...and we did!

Monday

Today we took Audrey back to Hillsborough and dropped her off at the Little School.  It was great having her in Lynchburg and she did fine on her first solo trip!  After shopping at REI and Williams-Sonoma, we headed back to Lynchburg with Henry, since it is his spring break!

Tuesday

Grandma and Henry goofed  off today while Grandpa went on a bike ride with the TOF Brothers.  They went to the grocery store.  Somehow,  Henry ended up with a donut?  After lunch they went down to Percival's Island so Henry could ride his bike while Grandma got her steps.  Henry found a golden lock on the bridge that said "poop!"  We wonder what the symbolic meaning of that lock is?

Wednesday

We went to SML today to put the boat in the water for the first time this year and to do some fishing.  We stopped to get some minnows to see if the bass might like them for lunch.   After lunch at the sail club, we headed out on the water.  We fished several spots but the bass were not biting.

It was a absolutely beautiful spring day on the water and we all loved getting this year's boating season underway.  On the way home, we stopped for dinner at the shops by the Route 122 bridge and Henry got to feed the carp!  He pets them too, something Grandma can not imagine doing!

Thursday

Grandma was helping with the blood drive at church so Henry and I headed to Farmville to ride the High Bridge Trail.   The bridge on the trail is 2,400 feet long and 125 feet above the Appomattox River.  We started riding in Farmville, stopped at a picnic table to eat our lunch, and rode to  the far end of the bridge.  Wind gusts in the 25 mph range made riding across the bridge an adventure!

We had a great time on our bicycles today.  Henry rode 10.4 miles and most of the time we were cruising at 8 mph!

Friday

The week flew by and it was time to take Henry home today.  Grandma and Grandpa love having you spend time with us on you school breaks Henry.  We had a great time this week.  To close out the week, we picked up Mommy and went to Hillsborough Barbecue for lunch.

Saturday

Kitchen Remodel

The cabinets in our kitchen were showing their age; water damage to finish, uneven color fading and scratches.  So, Gretchen and and I decided to refinish them.  The doors and cabinet fronts are solid wood and refinishing was by far the least expensive option!  So, we googled and visited the paint stores to learn how to do the job.

Before...
Then we spent the next 12 weeks cleaning, sanding, priming, sanding, painting, sanding and painting until the job was complete!  It was a lot of work and we learned a lot; and we are really pleased with the result of our efforts!

After!
