Double Nickels Roll Again

Monday, November 8

After a years absence, the Nickels are rolling again, on our way to Greenville, SC, to ride the Swamp Rabbit and Doodle Trails.  Emily and David are our leaders this year and we’re staying at a really nice VRBO in Travelers Rest!

Tuesday

We rode the Swamp Rabbit Trail from Travelers Rest to Greenville, starting at a very fashionable hour! The weather was perfect today, the trail paved and well maintained, and the fall colors were beautiful!

A highlight was riding around the lake on the Furman University campus.  The bell tower even played a tune for us!

The trail is lined with murals and sculptures. We were able to eat lunch at the Swamp Rabbit Grocery, a farm to table establishment on the trail. There are numerous restaurants, breweries and cafes along the trail!

The trail winds through downtown Greenville, in my opinion one of the best urban renewal projects I have seen! Our out and back ride allowed us to log 25.5 miles today.  The Swamp Rabbit is just a great trail!

Wednesday

Another beautiful day today finds us driving to Pickens to ride the Doodle Trail.  We discovered the trail was closed about 2 miles to the east for a bridge repair, so we rode out and back.

Then we drove to Easley and rode west to the closed bridge and back. The trail is all paved, a beautiful ride through a rural area.  The Pickens and Easley Rotary Clubs work together to support the trail. This picture was taken at a rest stop they just built!

Upon our return to Easley, we treated ourselves to ice cream treats! We logged 17.5 miles on today’s ride.  We then drove west to Sassafras Mountain, the highest point in South Carolina. It is quite a winding road up to the top but you’re rewarded with a wonderful 360 degree view from a neat observation deck.

Thursday/Friday

The weather turned on us today and rain prevented biking so we just took it easy, staying indoors and playing games.  On Friday, it was time to pack up and travel north!  Thanks so much to Emily and David for planning and organizing a wonderful trip this year. We appreciate your efforts!
